The Strand was opened in 1927 by a man named Benjamin Bass and was one of 48 bookstores that made up “Book Row” -which was a line of book stores from Union Square to Astor Place. Today the Strand is the only bookstore left from book row.
After 85 years the Strand is still a family business, owned by Fred Bass and his daughter Nancy Bass Wyden. With over 200 employees, a little over 2.5 million used, new and rare books and some of our most popular Manhattan Portage bags- this is a bookstore you have to check out!
